the BURRO

Rotary Club of Burleson, Texas, USA -- September 5, 2008

President Lisa takes a call, takes care of business.

BURRO Board meets Tuesday

Our club's officers meet on the second Tuesday of each month. For September, the meeting is next Tuesday, September 9.

President Lisa has graciously hosted board meetings this year at her home. The meetings begin at 5:30 p.m., and they usually last about one hour.

The club's board of directors deals with the business of running our club. Each month, they consider requests for donations, proposals for membership, opportunities for projects, problems with attendance and dues payments, and so forth. By handling these issues in the board meeting, the officers make weekly Rotary meetings more enjoyable for the rest of us.

All members are invited to attend board meetings. Members who wish to address the board should submit a request to President Lisa a few days before the scheduled meeting so they can be added to the agenda.

Each of us should express our appreciation to our officers for the jobs they do. Club Service is not always easy, but it is always constant. Let us all acknowledge our officers' commitment, and let us all follow their examples of service.

PDG inducted into Arch C. Klumph Society of R.I.

Past District Govenor Paul N. Geisel has been inducted into the Arch C. Klumph Society of Rotary International. The induction was held in April. The Society honors those with cumulative contributions of $250,000 or more to The Rotary Foundation.

Quoting from the September issue of The Rotarian magazine, “Some describe Past District Governor Paul N. Geisel, of Fort Worth, Texas, USA, as a walking public relations instrument for Rotary. That, however, only touches on his strong belief in philanthropy.”

“The people we help are real,” Geisel said. “This is not an abstraction. That’s why I give money. Somebody real is out there, somebody whose dignity is threatened, whose life is challenged. That’s why we’re here. The continuation of all this is very important. We need to support The Rotary Foundation and make the Permanent Fund grow.”

Also inducted with Paul were Rajashree and Aditya Birla of Mumbai, India, Vinay and Rashmi Kulkarni of Maharashtra, India.

The Rotary Foundation Sustaining Member Program

A Rotary Foundation Sustaining Member is a person who contributes $100 or more per year to the Annual Programs Fund. Why are Rotary Foundation Sustaining Members critical to the Foundation?

Rotarians recognize that without sustained support of the Annual Programs Fund, the programs of The Rotary Foundation cannot happen. With contributions of US$100 from every member every year, Rotary could nearly double its efforts to help needy people the world over, supporting the continued growth of programs.

In April 2001, the Council on Legislation unanimously passed a resolution approving the goal of Become a Rotary Foundation Sustaining Member Today. When you make a contribution to Rotary, you can be assured that your gift will be used to its fullest by Rotarians throughout the world.

Beginning in 2004-05, Rotarians giving $100 or more to the Annual Programs Fund automatically become Rotary Foundation Sustaining Members (RFSM), and are eligible to wear the RFSM sticker on their Rotary name badge. Every Sustaining Member gift to The Rotary Foundation is a gift of hope to those less fortunate. Every gift truly makes a difference in someone’s life.

Laughing out loud!

Walt heads to the utility room to do his laundry. But within seconds, he yells out, "Honey, what setting do I use on the washing machine?"

"It depends," his wife answers. "What does it say on your shirt?"

"University of Oklahoma."

NASA's Mars Lander has found traces of ice and salt on Mars. Right now it's searching for tequila. That's not all -- it also found an old blender.

A young ventriloquist is touring the clubs and one night he's doing a show in a small town in Arkansas. With his dummy on his knee, he starts going through his usual dumb blonde jokes.

Suddenly, a blonde woman in the 4th row stands on her chair and starts shouting: "I've heard enough of your stupid blonde jokes. What makes you think you can stereotype women that way? What does the colour of a person's hair have to do with her worth as a human being? It's guys like you who keep women like me from being respected at work and in the community, and from reaching our full potential as a person. Because you and your kind continue to perpetuate discrimination against not only blondes, but women in general.... and all in the name of humour!"

The embarrassed ventriloquist begins to apologize, and the blonde yells, "You stay out of this, mister! I'm talking to that little dork on your knee."
